History
Sea to Sky Community Services Society (SSCS) began as a registered non-profit society on June 5th, 1978. The society was born out of a need in the community to consider social programming at a grassroots, local level.
Our work began with a community resource directory of services for children, youth, families and adults, followed by our first contract to offer a program for children who were at risk of being removed from their homes or were already involved in the social welfare system. A second contract followed for supporting children who were diagnosed as having a special need.
SSCS continued operating these services successfully for the next 4 years.
A staff of 5 in 1986 became a staff of 30. By 1990, SSCS had an array of services including children and family interventions, daycare, parenting programs, and employment/training programs. Funding sources moved from beyond provincial funds to federal and user fee-based services.
In the early1990′s, SSCS recognized the need to have a presence in northern corridor communities and opened a small office in downtown Pemberton and secured office space in Whistler, as well.
By1998, Sea to Sky Community Services Society was offering over 38 different programs covering 6 different sectors of services. These sectors included childcare, employment assistance, community living, adult mental health, early alcohol & drug intervention and prevention, and urgent response. Nearly 100 staff members provided these programs throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor and revenues had grown to $2.5 million.
In 2000, SSCS began an accreditation process through CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) as part of the requirements the provincial government enforced on agencies if they wished to be considered for ongoing contracts for service. Accreditation also demonstrates a commitment to service excellence – we continue to renew our accreditation on a three-year cycle, most recently in 2010.
In September 2000, we opened the Pemberton Meadows Child Care Centre providing full day childcare, preschool programs, kinder care, and after school programs. At the same time in Squamish, an excellent partnership developed with the District of Squamish to provide staff and programming for the Squamish Youth Resource Centre.
In 2007, we opened our Early Learning and Child Development Centre in Squamish – another significant landmark.
As we move into the second decade of the 21st century, SSCS continues to plan for a permanent site for its services. Collaborative work is being done between ourselves and the United Church for a site in Squamish, as well as with our existing landlord in Pemberton.
Today, we offer 40 programs that provide direct support and services to over 4000 individuals and families. We employ over 140 staff and contribute over $7 million dollars a year to the local economy.
